What is a power flush?
A power flush is a deep clean of your central heating system. Using a high-flow pump, cleaning chemicals are circulated through radiators, pipework and the boiler's heat exchanger in reverse and forward directions to break down and remove sludge, rust (magnetite) and scale. Once the system runs clear, it's refilled with fresh water and a corrosion inhibitor to protect it going forward.
A build-up of sludge restricts water flow, forces the boiler pump to work harder, and is one of the most common causes of cold radiators and reduced heating efficiency in older central heating systems.


Signs your heating system may need a power flush

Cold spots on radiators, especially towards the bottom

Radiators that take a long time to heat up, or need frequent bleeding

Discoloured (black or brown) water when bleeding a radiator

Noise from the boiler or circulation pump — banging, gurgling or kettling

Power flushing vs chemical flushing
A power flush uses a pumped machine to force water through the system at high flow and in both directions - effective for established sludge and blockages, particularly in older or larger systems.
A chemical flush relies on cleaning chemicals left to circulate using the system's own pump, sometimes followed by a rinse. It's a lighter-touch option, often used for newer systems, single-radiator issues, or as routine maintenance rather than a full clean.
