Upgrading an Ideal Combi Boiler with OpenTherm Load Compensation Controls

At LHS Plumbing Services, we don't just service boilers - we help homeowners get the very best performance from their heating systems.

Recently, we carried out a routine annual service in Buckhurst Hill on an Ideal combi boiler. The appliance passed all safety and performance checks, with combustion readings, gas pressures and operational tests confirming it was working correctly.

Rather than simply leaving the system as it was, we discussed ways the customer could further improve the efficiency and comfort of their home. One of our recommendations was to upgrade the heating controls by fitting a wireless OpenTherm thermostat with load compensation.

The customer decided to go ahead with the upgrade.

What Is Load Compensation?

Traditional room thermostats simply switch the boiler fully on or fully off. This causes the boiler to repeatedly cycle, often operating at higher temperatures than necessary.

Load compensation works differently. Using the OpenTherm communication protocol, the thermostat continuously tells the boiler how much heat the property actually requires. Instead of firing at maximum output, the boiler modulates its flame to match the heating demand, improving efficiency and reducing cycling.

Why OpenTherm?

Ideal boilers that support OpenTherm can communicate directly with compatible smart controls.

The wireless thermostat installed now provides:

  • More stable room temperatures

  • Improved boiler modulation

  • Reduced boiler cycling

  • Longer periods operating in condensing mode

  • Lower gas consumption

  • Quieter operation

  • Potentially longer boiler lifespan due to reduced wear

A Simple Upgrade with Big Benefits

The installation was completed with minimal disruption. Once paired with the Ideal combi boiler, the wireless OpenTherm thermostat immediately began controlling the boiler using load compensation rather than simple on/off switching.

The result is a heating system that reacts intelligently to the home's demand, delivering greater comfort while helping reduce running costs.

Thinking Beyond the Boiler Service

An annual boiler service ensures your appliance remains safe and reliable, but it's also the perfect opportunity to identify upgrades that can improve efficiency.

If your boiler is working well but still uses a basic thermostat, upgrading to modern load compensation controls could be one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make.

At LHS Plumbing Services, we assess every heating system individually and recommend upgrades that deliver genuine long-term value - not unnecessary replacements.

If your Ideal boiler is compatible with OpenTherm, we'd be happy to advise on the best controls for your home. Call 02081111230
