Weather compensation is an intelligent heating control system that uses an outdoor temperature sensor to monitor the weather outside your property. It automatically adjusts the flow temperature of the water sent to your radiators or underfloor heating based on how much heat your home is losing.



How Does It Work?


Rather than running your boiler at a fixed temperature all day, weather compensation continually adjusts the heating output:

  1. Cold outside: The boiler increases the flow temperature.

  2. Mild outside: The boiler lowers the flow temperature.

Is It Suitable for Heat Pumps?


Absolutely. Heat pumps perform best with low flow temperatures, making weather compensation an essential part of an efficient heat pump installation. It allows the system to match the heating demand without unnecessary energy use.


Weather Compensation vs Load Compensation


While both improve efficiency:

  • Weather compensation predicts heating demand using the outside temperature.

  • Load compensation reacts to the indoor temperature and adjusts the boiler accordingly.

Many modern systems combine both methods for optimum performance.


Can Existing Boilers Use Weather Compensation?


Many boilers from manufacturers such as Vaillant, Viessmann, Ideal, and Worcester Bosch support weather compensation when paired with compatible controls and an outdoor sensor. Some systems also use OpenTherm or manufacturer-specific communication protocols for even finer control.
